Sweden, May 2001

A week-long trip to Sweden was a perfect break from our jobs in London. Jennie and Christian invited us to stay with them for the week, so we took them up on the offer. One of the most memorable activities of hanging out in Sweden was the game KUBE. Historically, the game dates back to the Vikings. It reminded me a lot of Boccee, so I was ready to play any time someone mentioned the word. Unfortunately, the game is not sold anywhere in the US, but it would be pretty easy to make all of the pieces at home. My attempt at explaining the game is detailed below.

  • Set up the field as shown in the above diagram
  • Teams line up behind the baseline
  • Each team takes a turn trying to knock over the opponents kubes by throwing all 6 throwing sticks
  • After successfully knocking down a kube, the fallen kube is thrown back to opponent's side of the field and placed wherever it landed - it becomes an additional target kube
  • When all kubes have been taken out, the team must knock down the king piece
  • The team that takes down the king first wins the game
