Web Work Portfolio

How it all began

It all started in 1997 when Purdue University gave me access to my own student website. I learned about HTML and started exploring some ideas of how to code a website. The old Webmonkey site was where I found some of my first tutorials. My initial site was filled with blinking text, tiled backgrounds, and images linked from other sites. I have even uncovered old entries from my very first weblog, dating back to December 13, 1997.

Since then, I have learned how to write proper HTML and I am working on valid XHTML. Incorporating valid CSS into my work has become a mission since I started following the standards gurus: Jeffrey Zeldman and Eric Meyer. Currently, all coding is done manually and most imaging is done with Photoshop. Also, I am familiar with quite a few other programs, including: Dreamweaver, Premiere, Illustrator, and Flash.

Web Experience

2000 - La Milleterie

www.angelfire.com/blues/lamilleterie

La Milleterie is a farm in the Loire Valley region of France. I was volunteering with the program: Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF). During the course of a one-month stay, I participated in a variety of work around the farm. At one point, we were hit with a three-day rainstorm. This simple website is the result of a few hours of downtime, fueled by baguettes and chevre cheese. I used a minimal approach to build the site since there was only access to very basic equipment and software. This is a "free" website hosted by angelfire.com; hence, all of the ads.

  • Free website
  • Basic promotional material for potential customers and volunteers

Work Done:

The portfolio section provides a description of what I do when I am sitting at the keyboard drinking coffee.

2005 - TMS ADMIN Application

In progress - resides on the GE Company Intranet

The TMS ADMIN application will replace a current in-house application and will be used to maintain GE's transportation data. This application is the result of a GE Six Sigma quality project that I am managing. For this project, the needs of the functional users have been translated into technical specifications for the IT development team.

Problem:

The current TMS ADMIN system is out-dated, written in older technology and functionality has not kept up with recent changes. Access to this application is limited and system response time slow. Also, the users cannot perform updates by themselves.

Goals:

  • Give access to all potential users
  • Re-design the code to improve the process flow, create a user-friendly interface, and perform with an efficient response time
  • Automate many of the users' tasks and reduce the time it takes to perform all operations
  • Empower the user with self-service
  • Secure the application according to customer standards

Work Done:

  • Project planning, scope, team leader
  • Data collection
  • Technical Specifications
  • Screen Design

2005 - TMS European Routing Tool Application

In progress

The TMS European Routing Tool is an application that will be used by GE and affiliate shippers to gather pricing information for a variety of different shipping options within Europe.

Problem:

The pricing structure has become too complex to maintain on individual Excel spreadsheets. Updates are becoming more difficult to communicate in a timely manner.

Goals:

  • Make the rates accessible from one central source
  • Automate calculation logic for a variety of price structures
  • List all shipping options on one screen

Work Done:

  • Project planning, scope, team leader
  • Data collection
  • Technical Specifications
  • Screen Design
